Evans listed this painting twice in auctions through Christie's London. First attempt was on April 28, 1803—the painting remained unsold. The painting was eventually sold on May 29, 1804 and attributed to Giorgione. Virtually nothing is known about the seller—he is listed as "Evans" in the two auction catalogues titled, "A Gentleman, Leaving Town to reside in the Country" and "A Gentleman of Distinguished Taste, leaving Town."
