Passed down through inheritance, beginning with Dom Fernando Alvares de Castro in 1632 (purchased as a Dürer). His grand-nephew Dom Manoel de Castro inherited the painting. The painting later passed through inheritance to Jean de Castro Penamacor. Eventually the painting ended up in the possession of Antonia de Saldanha de Albuquerque Castro de Mesquite Lobo de Andread de Ribafria by 1843.

Previous owner was an M. de Bertillac (no further information provided). He was possibly a seventeenth/eighteenth-century French lieutenant-general mentioned in Philippe de Courcillon's Memoirs of the Court of France from 1684 to 1720, English translation (p.317). He was given the government of Rocroi, France by Louis XIV in 1697. Kress Foundation provenance says that the painting entered the collection of Philippe II as early as 1737, but he died in 1723.
