David Gilmour Blythe's painting Boy Eating Bread (On the Sly; Schoolboy Studying) (Figure 1, p.3) is an important 19th century painting offered by the Hillman Family Foundations as a proposed gift to the collection of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Although not discussed here, it should be noted that the gift also included a second Blythe painting of a similar subject (The Truant Boy; The Schoolmaster), making the pair the 5th and 6th Blythe paintings in the collection.
